WORDS FROM THE WISE.
Animism is the belief that all living and non-living things have a spirit.
That includes people, animals, inanimate objects and forces of nature.
Shamans are the only people (religious leaders) with the power to control the spirits.
Ookpik has carved a Shaman's face with his Gjoa Haven style.
A large flat nose with flared nostrils, decorative tattoos on the cheeks and around the mouth, large round inlaid eyes and those hard to ignore teeth/tusks!
The Gjoa Haven carving style challenges our expectations.
Is it fair to say that Ookpik is playing with his design?
Perhaps some African tribal design?
Perhaps, our Shaman is in the early stages of transformation into a Walrus.
The Gjoa Haven artists are like no other carvers in the North.
Their style is easily identifiable.
It is humourous, innovative and rich in spirit.
This tantalizing sculpture will become the curiousity in your collection,
See our notes on The Gjoa Haven Collection.
